One of the most interesting things to come out of this week’s South by Southwest Festival is a short film about type designers Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones called Font Men. Though the two are currently facing off in court over the assets of their Hoefler & Frere-Jones type foundry, the 6-minute documentary shows us something much more interesting: the passion that drives some designers to create typography for the rest of their lives.
After watching it, you’ll also probably be left with the same conclusion we were. Away from the lawyers, away from the squabbling over millions, the two men must look at this short film and wonder, if only to themselves, how a love for beautiful lettering and a mutually respectful relationship went this far wrong.
