Big Island Coffee Roasters

When I think of Hawaii, there are some stereotypical images that come to mind immediately – fragrant orchid leis, surfboards on the beach, those flowery shirts that Magnum P.I. wore. Happily, un- studio chose a palette and graphics for this packaging project that showed a more intimate side of paradise.

The natural environment serves as inspiration for the design of the client’s coffee bags, but it’s executed in a way that makes you feel as if you’ve stumbled upon the real Hawaii – an untamed and beautiful place. Center stage is a medallion logo with an image of the wild boar set against a deep teal background. The color combination creates a striking contrast.

There are details to savor along every inch of the packaging: Handwritten roasting notes on the labels, perforations on both ends of the label that recall the logo’s orange edging, the silky matte surface of the paper, type and small coffee bean illustrations printed in silver foil, the company’s brand story, and my favorite – a quote from George Bernard Shaw:

“Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.”
