The ink was barely dry on Cenveo’s $25 million acquisition of bankrupt National Envelope in September 2013 before Mohawk revealed that it would plow $2.5 million into new equipment alone to boost its presence in the envelope market. Mohawk is about to move from having one shift five days a week to three shifts seven days a week working at its Ashtabula, Ohio envelope converting plant.
According to CEO Tom O’Connor, the company may even expand the footprint of its 1-million-square-foot facility (which employs 125) as it transitions from producing 500 million envelopes last year to a projected 2.5 billion in 2014.
Once operation-expansion plans are complete this month, it expects envelope sales to reach $80 million this year.
