Our most, our best, our highest are always achieved when our work comes from the raw experience of the heart. The 2012 annual report for the LIVESTRONG Foundation was inspired by Mike Amann’s battle with cancer. Mike was a graphic designer and partner at BLDG, the firm responsible for this project. Sadly, Mike lost his battle with cancer after this project was completed.
BLDG hand-pulled all 770 screenprinted covers for the perfect-bound book. Besides its tactile fine art quality, screenprinting serves as the perfect metaphor – six layers of ink pulled through screens help to explain the complex layers of dealing with cancer.
Inside, the distinctive brand of yellow and copious amounts of black tie the 54 pages together as the stories of the foundation and the people it serves unfold. An unusual dot pattern appears throughout, which is printed without moiré thanks to superb stochastic screening.
The overall feeling of warmth is enhanced by the stock choices (Legion Paper’s Coventry Rag on the cover and Monadnock’s Dulcet on the text). Images are made all the more personal thanks to their ultra-warm tone and the smiling faces, so direct and optimistic.
