The production highlight was achieving the unique oxidized copper patina within a print production environment.
– Rich Pauptit, Flash Reproductions
Since 1925, Heather & Little has been a leader in the fabrication and supply of ornamental sheet metal reproductions for the building restoration industry. The company is well known throughout North America for its sheet metal roof ornaments, statuary restoration and custom sheet metal work. Overdrive Design Creative Director James Wilson wanted to highlight the company’s specialty and quality work when designing its new identity system.
Overdrive teamed up with printer Flash Reproductions to create a look that puts their client’s sheet metal work front and center, from the business cards and letterhead to envelopes and folders. Taking cues from the Arts and Crafts movement, the innovative, detail-oriented concept was very challenging to execute, but that didn’t deter the design team.
Specifically, the designer aimed to create oxidized copper accents, which is what makes the business cards so stunning — and why several printers said it could not be done. The company logo is bronze foil stamped and the edges of the card are gilded to match. The patina, the pièce de résistance, was screen printed. The result is an eye-catching system that feels both high-end and time-worn.
