In a year in which the Summer Games are plagued by political protests, off-the-scales water pollution, and the usual insane bans on uses of words like, um, “Olympic,” this pop-up book/invitation to the event sent by Bell Canada to 25 of that country’s top business leaders may be one of the highlights of this year’s games.
Granted, the exterior is a pretty sedate affair…
…but once you begin to open it up, you gain a keen appreciation for how much thought went into crafting this piece. It took 11 mockups and over four months before printers Flash Reproductions (they of the mind-blowing Wayward Arts magazine) were able to finally bring this design by Zulu Alpha Kilo to life. (Check out the “Production Lessons” on this UnderConsideration writeup for an idea of just how complicated this was.)
One of the most impressive aspects of all this is the fact that not a drop of ink was spilled on the inside of this cloth-bound book: all of that vibrant color is made possible by Neenah’s appropriately named Astrobrights [Get swatchbook] line!

It truly is a nice piece, but it astonishes me that, with all the money, hours, care and craft that went into it, they didn’t bother to check if they had spelled the name of the city correctly on the cover.
Wow! What a great catch – good eye!
