In a little over a year, digital gold ink has gone from a rumored-but-unseen promise to arguably the most important new development to hit the print design world in a decade. In this PaperSpecs and Neenah video, Tom Ingalls and Kseniya Makarova of Ingalls Design take you on a detailed tour of how they created the dazzling Golden State Postcard Sampler – a collection of craft-beer inspired cards – using newly added Neenah Environment papers and digital gold ink. See it all, from preliminary sketches and on-screen designs to the finished product – all in under 5 minutes.
Watch Tom Ingalls and Kseniya Makarova from Ingalls Design (San Francisco) talk about the project in this video from our In The Design Studio series.

Neenah Digital Gold Ink Postcard Sampler
We thought this day would never dawn, but glittering, shimmering, magnificent gold ink for digital presses has finally arrived. This postcard sampler designed for Neenah Paper by Ingalls Design heralds the potential now within our design toolboxes.
The theme used for the collection seamlessly unites the various sources of inspiration: California’s “Golden State” nickname, the state’s well-loved craft beer niche, and what Ingalls calls the “beer-appropriate” colors recently added to Neenah’s Environment paper line (Honeycomb, Husk, Grocer Kraft, and Wrought Iron).
There are so many elements to love here. Each postcard reveals the richness and shine that are achievable with various opacities of gold ink – from the subtle sparkle of 20 percent to extravagant iridescence of 100 percent.
The creative layering of gold ink along with CMYK over uncoated, colored paper perfectly conveys the personalities of each card’s beer style: Route 49 Stout, Cup of Gold Lager, Eureka! Wine Barrel Aged IPA, and Golden Eagle Wild Wheat Ale.
Drink it in people. The Golden Age of digital gold ink is here!
