After developing his eco-friendly line of soy candles under the moniker Corky Candle Co., owner Aron Jefferson wanted the packaging to be entirely recyclable and/or biodegradable. He was drawn to the mid-century business design aesthetic and sought to create a brand that appealed both to men and women.
Designer Zoe Marin took a clean and crisp approach to this directive, creating a label and tag that feature a pattern inspired by a flame, along with a modern twist on a vintage logo design.
The 2”-x-2” tag is printed on Neenah Environment Raw Grocer Kraft Digital 100 lb. Cover, folded, trimmed and drilled. The round label is printed on 100% post-consumer waste, uncoated white, then laser cut into a custom floral shape.
Customization was also a priority: Marin incorporated a line on the inside of the tag that allows the company to note the date the candle was poured. The corks are also hand-branded with the logo’s flame icon. And, depending on the scent, dye is added to the wax to provide variation.
Marin says finding a 100% recycled post-consumer waste label that had recycling compatible adhesive was a must for the client. “There are not very many options on the market, but we found one supplied through Creative Label Concepts,” she says. “The Neenah Environment line was also an important green element.”
The glass bottles are recyclable and returnable for a discount on future candle purchases. Plus, the jute cord and natural cork are both biodegradable.
