When designing the labels for Vine Roots wines, TSMGO Brand Consultants (The Show Must Go On) wanted to commemorate the traditional botanical notebooks used by vigneron (winemakers) in their search to find the essence of their land. To create each varietal, every hue and every aroma is purposefully “collected” and added to the mixture with great care. The process — an arduous ritual — is documented step by step in a field diary. “We make reference to the figure of the vigneron as the author of the diary by using typography and colors that recreate these handwritten ink entries,” says creative director Ricardo Moreno Rodríguez.
The foreground of each digitally printed Vine Roots label includes hand-drawn illustrations of the roots of herbal aromatic species. The selected species are native to the area and thereby strengthen their relationship with the nuances of the wine. The grape varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot-Syrah — are foil stamped with gold and purple metallic foils, and each bottle is numbered.
The label is made from ecological felt paper — Tintoretto Gesso 95 / Freelife Merida White 100 — which has a felt finish that evokes a rustic feel very much in keeping with the storytelling project. And the bottle shape is reminiscent of a glass jar in which essences are collected as if it were a perfume.
