The length of the production run of the ACC Emerging Artists book was low, but the sophistication of the audience was high. So, the quality of the publication needed to meet both of these parameters. The book needed to be a finely crafted object by itself, adding to its inherent value and serving as a covetable collection of the artists being recognized.

The American Craft Council’s Emerging Voices Awards is a program that recognizes emerging talent in the field of craft. To commemorate the 2016 award recipients, the ACC wished to create a lasting and tactile publication to honor the six award-winning artists, and worked closely in collaboration with Mohawk to make their concept a reality.
The ACC selected Joseph D. O’Leary, owner and founder of Veto Design, to develop a printed publication featuring thoughtful essays and stunning portraits of each award winner’s work.
The publication, which also features photography by O’Leary, is grand in scale, design and imagery. O’Leary describes his inspiration: “I wanted the portraits [of the artists] to be emerging, to play off the title, to emerge from the darkness, like a chapter opening for each artist … up close and personal, in large format with, in some cases, full bleed, and incredible detail.”
Goal achieved. The 9.5”-x-14” publication features a luxurious, tactile cover printed on Mohawk Loop [Get the Swatchbook] Antique Vellum Digital with i-Tone Urban Grey 110 lb. DTC. The title of the book pops in PMS Yellow 012 and white ink, and coordinates beautifully with the bright yellow book cloth binding. Text pages are printed on Mohawk Superfine [Get the Swatchbook] Eggshell Digital with i-Tone Ultrawhite 80 lb. Text, resulting in truly outstanding print resolution.
The publication, which was produced at the Mohawk Print Innovation Center on an HP Indigo 5600 Digital Press, also was the winner of the first annual HP Inkspiration Awards given out at the 11th annual Dscoop conference.
