Sketch School Guide

There are teachers so good at what they do, they manage to teach even those who are not their students. Such is the case with this poster and booklet from Carol Sogard at the University of Utah.

Her philosophy is that inspiration comes from doing, not from a blank piece of paper. So the assignment for the students of her Design Process class was to create a sketchbook journal (five entries per week over the course of 15 weeks).

Through the students’ journal entries, a variety of mediums and techniques used to drive creativity, thought and creation are highlighted. The resulting multitude of entries were used as the content for the poster and “Sketch School” booklet that will show future students how to create their journals for this class.

Sogard had a lot of organizing and editing to produce these inspiring and meaningful tools. (All great teachers learn from their students as well.) I liked her choice of paper (Domtar’s Husky Offset) because it mimics the paper that you’d find in a sketchbook.

Even I want to take my own journal to new expressive heights. Does anyone have an apple for this woman?! She deserves a bushel.
