Must Have: Mohawk
Since its debut in 2013, The Mohawk Maker Quarterly has arguably been the only American art publication to expertly marry cutting-edge design with equally compelling paper choice. And with its latest issue, No. 16, it continues to push the boundaries of just what a print publication can be. Taking “Community” as its theme, it’s actually three books in one, all printed on Mohawk Superfine, and held together by a Blue foiled Strathmore Wove bellyband upon which is printed the editor’s letter.
The three volumes – “Place,” “Voice” and “Time” – feature intriguing articles on how each of these aspects of community affect what designers and other “makers” create. And because it’s The Mohawk Maker Quarterly, designers Hybrid Design have once again placed a strong emphasis on the tactile quality of print. This comes out most in the delightful die cuts along the edge of the pages. Combined with clever scoring and colorful printing, the result is as visually arresting as it is intriguingly touchable.
