Wood Type and Letterpress: A Winning Combination
Thursday, May 5, 2016
2:00 p.m. Eastern (11:00 a.m. Pacific)

In PaperSpecs’ upcoming free webinar sponsored by Neenah, get a behind-the-scenes look at how wood type and letterpress can re-energize a classic font, and transform your print projects too.

Palo Alto, California – April 15, 2016 – Sometimes a project comes along where you really need for your type to shine. A groundbreaking endeavor by designer Craig Welsh will show how wood type and letterpress can give your project that something extra.

Inspired by the work of designer Alvin Lustig, Welsh is reviving a font designed by Lustig in the 1930s using wood type.  Called “Lustig Elements,” the wood type will be cut at Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, and featured by Neenah on four limited edition prints.

“Wood type is catching the attention of serious typographers for good reason,” says Sabine Lenz, founder of PaperSpecs.com. “By sharing his efforts to create a font using wood type, Craig Welsh is showing designers first-hand how it can breathe new life into their print projects.”

Ready to transform your typography game? This webinar will shed light on Welsh’s cutting-edge work and show how wood type and letterpress can impress your clients.

Guest Speaker
Wood has been used for lettering and illustrations since the first printed documents were created in China in 868. One of its greatest benefits: Its lightness and availability make it ideal for producing large letters. Not only is it less expensive than metal, but large metal type has been known to crack as it cools, whereas wood type leaves a smooth, even surface. Welsh will share some of the virtues of wood type as he gives you an exclusive look at this exciting and groundbreaking project.

Webinar Highlights
Highlights of this presentation include:

  • An overview of what goes into the creation of wood type.
  • Insight into letterpress printing with wood type.
  • How to use wood type in conjunction with polymer plates.
  • A look at why letterpress is such an attractive method for printing.

PaperSpecs webinars are developed to include inspiring real-world examples, highly useful and easily implemented tips, cutting-edge perspectives from industry thought leaders, and the results of the most current research.
